Summer Time, The Element of Fire

As we welcome January, summer is in full swing, a time of warmth, transformation and dynamic change. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the element of Fire is symbolic of summer time.

2017Summer brings fire through the warm rays of the sun, bringing a sense of new energy and joy to our lives whilst stirring a season of determination and personal power. Fire energy brings a continuous momentum of growing energy allowing us to give birth to new ideas, resolutions and personal transformation.

Summer time is a season to:

  • Start some form of aerobic exercise. Whether it is walking, gym classes, swimming or boot camp, summer is a fabulous time to get exercising. Aerobic exercise is good for us during summer, because the fire element governs the heart and circulatory system.
  • Eat seasonal foods. Choose nutrient dense raw or lightly cooked foods such as  fresh salads, lettuce greens, bitter foods such as rocket and watercress, asparagus, cucumber, sprouts, watermelon, pineapple, cherries, berries, lemons and limes. Include warming spices to help to release heat from the body such as chilli and ginger. Fire also governs the small intestine, which according to TCM is interconnected with the heart. The small intestine absorbs the nutrients we eat from our food which then enter the blood stream. The blood travels to the heart and pumped to the entire body. If you feed your body heavily processed food that is low in nutrients, the small intestine has few nutrients to absorb. It’s important therefore to eat fresh seasonal foods that provide the variety of nutrients that the body needs during the active season of summer.fruit-and-veg-basket-a
  • Be social. The fire element of summer is linked to socializing and connections. Meet up with friends, network and make new friends, you just never know where a cup of tea can lead to!
  • Avoid iced drinks, frozen icy poles and ice-creams as much as possible. Contrary to popular belief these foods are contracting and hold in heat, sweat and toxins. Cut back on heavy foods such as meat, butter, dairy and grains which can make you feel heavy and lethargic during the summer months.
